Before and After Brow Lift Surgery
Everything you need to know

A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can help to improve the appearance of the brows and forehead. The goal of a browlift is to create a more youthful and refreshed look by lifting the brows, eliminating frown lines, and creating a smooth, lifted forehead.

Do you feel as though you always look angry, sad, or tired? Do your eyebrows ever feel heavy?

The eyebrow and forehead region is a tell-tale sign to determine age and emotion. If you feel as though your eyebrows are dropping and forehead wrinkles are prominent, a forehead lift may be the right procedure for you. Increased skin laxity causes the forehead to drop and wrinkles to form, resulting in an aged and tired appearance. After just one week following a forehead lift by Dr. Kassir, you can return to looking and feeling your best. A forehead lift restores the volume of the forehead to eradicate wrinkles while tightening the lax skin, resulting in a younger appearance.

What happens during browlift surgery?

Several brow lift techniques can be used, depending on the individual patient’s goals and needs. The most common brow lift techniques are the endoscopic browlift, direct brow lift, temporal browlift, and coronal browlift.

All techniques aim to mobilize the brow and lift it to achieve a more youthful appearance. The forehead muscles and tissues are relocated upwards. This process eliminates forehead wrinkles by tightening the skin to produce a younger and rejuvenated appearance. Depending on the patient, excess fat tissue can be removed to balance the face. The eyebrows and forehead are lifted, so the patient looks more youthful and happy.

The different techniques for brow lift surgery

The endoscopic brow lift is a minimally invasive technique that uses small incisions and an endoscope (a small camera) to lift the low or sagging brow. This technique is often used for patients who have mild to moderate brow drooping. The forehead is lifted back and temporarily secured with either sutures or screws that are hidden within the hairline. After a few weeks the sutures and screws will be removed and the scars stay hidden. By lifting the brow the upper eyelids are automatically lifted as well. If there is additional excess upper eyelid skin an eyelid lift can be performed at the same time.

The direct brow lift is a more traditional technique involving making an incision along the upper border of the eyebrow. It will lift the brow by excising a marked area of skin. The incision follows the natural curve of the eyebrow, thus hiding the final scar. This technique is often used for moderate to severe brow drooping.

The temporal brow lift is a technique that involves making small incisions at the temples, hidden within the hairline, and lifting the sides of the brows. Depending on the extent and direction of pull this technique often leads to an accentuated eyebrow shape. In recent years these lifts are often referred to as "fox eye" or "cat eye" lifts.

The coronal brow lift is a technique that involves making an incision along the hairline, from ear to ear. This technique can be very powerful and used for patients with more significant brow drooping. However, it also results in the longest scar. If the distance between the hairline and the brow is very long, the coronal browlift can eliminate excess skin and shorten the distance. That way the forehead appears shorter and more youthful.

What is the recovery like after brow lift surgery?

Any technique of brow lifts can be performed under local anesthesia. The recovery after a brow lift is quick and with minimal pain or discomfort. Most swelling and bruising dissipates within the first week. Often a brow lift is combined with other facial cosmetic surgery. Depending on how many procedures are being performed at the same time the recovery period might be slightly longer.

What should you consider after surgery?

Strenuous activity and exercise should be avoided for the first few weeks as well. Sutures or staples are usually removed within 7-10 days following surgery. Most patients return to work and their social life within two weeks.

  • Eat healthily and provide enough protein in your diet

  • Stay well hydrated

  • keep your head elevated to decrease swelling

  • You are allowed to shower and you should keep your hair and incisions clean

  • The wound care is minimal and will involve only a thin layer of ointment daily to the incisions

  • Sutures will be removed around two weeks

The risks of brow lift surgery are rare, but you should know about them.

  • bleeding

  • infection

  • asymmetry

  • hair loss along the incisions

  • numbness or nerve injury

  • brow ptosis (drooping)

However, remember that most brow lift complications are minor and can be easily treated.

Brow lift surgery can often be combined with other facial cosmetic surgery procedures such as:

  • eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty or eyelid lift)

  • facelift (rhytidectomy) and neck lift

  • rhinoplasty

  • lip lift

  • laser resurfacing

What is the difference between a surgical browlift and a botox brow lift?

Surgical brow lifts have instant and permanent results.

If you aren’t ready for a surgical approach, there are other ways to improve lax skin and eyebrow wrinkles through dermal fillers.

Botox/Dysport fillers relax the forehead muscles so that they don’t appear to pull downwards while also filling in fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers typically last 3-6 months and require no downtime.

If you are considering brow lift surgery, it is important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience performing brow lifts. Dr. Kassir is an expert in endoscopic brow lift, temporal brow lift, coronal brow lift, and direct brow lift.
